What is SAPVIA?
SAPVIA (South African Photovoltaic Industry Association) is the industry body for solar professionals in South Africa. SAPVIA membership requires solar installers to:
- Pass technical competency assessments
- Hold a valid ECSA (Engineering Council of SA) registration or supervising engineer
- Carry professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Comply with NRS 097-2-3 (SA solar installation standard)
- Issue a valid COC (Certificate of Compliance) for every installation
Why SAPVIA matters for you
Only SAPVIA-registered installations qualify for the SARS Section 12B solar tax deduction. Unregistered installations also void manufacturer warranties and cannot get COC certificates for municipal grid connection.
How FlowLeads vets installers
We manually verify SAPVIA membership, insurance certificates, and COC issuance history before onboarding any installer. Installer ratings are updated quarterly based on customer feedback.
What to check before hiring any solar installer
Ask for their SAPVIA membership number
Verify at sapvia.co.za before signing anything.
Request a written quote with equipment specifications
Must include panel make/model, inverter brand, battery (if applicable), warranty terms.
Confirm they will issue a COC
Required for grid connection and SARS rebate. Non-negotiable.
Check their ECSA registration or supervising engineer
Required by law for grid-tied systems above 1 kVA.
Verify municipality approval process
Most municipalities require a Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) application. Your installer should handle this.
Ask about workmanship warranty
Minimum 2 years on workmanship, 10–12 years on panels, 5 years on inverter is standard.
