Do the exterior first
If you're doing both, paint the exterior first. It's weather-dependent and needs a dry window, while interior work can happen any time. Getting the outside done while the weather is good avoids delays.
Exterior painting
- Prep is critical. Pressure-clean, scrape flaking paint, treat any mould, fill cracks, and prime bare patches. Skipping this is the #1 reason exterior paint peels within a year or two.
- Use the right paint. Exterior-grade, UV-stable, flexible acrylics handle SA sun and temperature swings.
- Weather window. Avoid painting in rain, extreme heat, or onto damp walls.
Interior painting
- Lighter prep, but still patch cracks, sand glossy areas and prime new plaster.
- Sheen matters. Matt hides wall imperfections; washable/satin suits kitchens, bathrooms and high-traffic areas.
- Ventilation. Keep rooms aired while painting and drying.
How long it lasts
A properly prepped interior lasts 5–10 years; exterior 5–8 years depending on sun and weather exposure. Preparation and the right paint system matter more than the brand on the tin.
