What is PIRB?
PIRB (Plumbing Industry Registration Board) is the statutory body that registers and regulates plumbers in South Africa. Registration requires a valid Trade Test Certificate (issued by the QCTO), proof of work experience, and ongoing compliance with the National Building Regulations and SANS standards.
Why does PIRB registration matter?
- Certificate of Compliance (COC). Only a registered plumber can issue a COC — legally required for any new or altered plumbing installation. No COC = your insurer can reject your claim.
- Insurance. PIRB-registered plumbers carry public liability insurance. If their work causes damage, you have legal recourse.
- Quality assurance. PIRB can investigate and discipline registered plumbers. An unregistered plumber has no accountability mechanism.
- Bond / property transfer. Banks require a valid plumbing COC when approving bonds and when properties are sold.
How to verify PIRB registration
- Go to pirb.org.za
- Click "Verify a Plumber" or use the search function
- Enter the plumber's registration number or name
- A valid registration will show current status, expiry date, and the registered individual's name
Ask any plumber for their PIRB number before booking. A legitimate plumber will provide it immediately.
Questions to ask before hiring
- What is your PIRB registration number?
- Are you able to issue a COC for this job?
- Do you carry public liability insurance?
- Can you provide references for similar work?
Red flags
- Refuses to provide PIRB number
- Says COC is "not required" for the work described
- Quotes only verbally, refuses to put anything in writing
- Significantly undercuts every other quote (often indicates no insurance, no COC, no registration)
