The short answer: 1–8 weeks

A typical residential solar installation in South Africa takes 1–8 weeks from quote acceptance to being fully operational, depending on your municipality, installer workload, and system complexity.

Week-by-week timeline

StageTypical durationWhat happens
Quote + site inspection1–5 daysInstaller visits, measures roof, checks DB, provides final quote
Deposit + procurement3–7 daysPanels, inverter, batteries ordered. Most are ex-stock in SA.
Municipality notification1–3 daysInstaller notifies municipality (required pre-installation)
Installation day1–2 daysPanels mounted, inverter wired, DB work done, system commissioned
COC issuance1–3 daysElectrical COC issued by installer (legally required)
Grid connection / meter upgrade2–6 weeksMunicipality installs bi-directional meter (for grid export). Grid-tied only.

What causes delays?

  • Municipality meter upgrade. This is the biggest variable. Cape Town is typically 2–4 weeks; some rural municipalities take 6–8 weeks. Battery-only systems or off-grid systems skip this step entirely.
  • Stock availability. Popular inverter/battery combinations (Sunsynk 5 kW + Pylontech) sometimes have 1–3 week lead times during peak season.
  • Complex roofs. Slate, flat concrete, or thatch roofs need specialised mounting and can add 1–2 days to installation.

Can I use solar before the meter upgrade?

Yes — if you have a battery. A solar + battery system operates fully off the grid until your bi-directional meter is installed. You won't be able to export excess to Eskom, but you can power your home from solar and battery from day one.
