What aircon installation costs in 2026
For a back-to-back midwall split unit (the most common home install), expect to pay between R8,000 and R14,000 for a 9,000–12,000 BTU unit, fully installed. Bigger units and trickier installs cost more.
| Unit size (BTU) | Room size | Supplied + installed |
|---|---|---|
| 9,000 | Small bedroom / office (≤18 m²) | R8,000–R11,000 |
| 12,000 | Standard lounge / bedroom (≤25 m²) | R9,500–R14,000 |
| 18,000 | Large open-plan room (≤40 m²) | R13,000–R18,000 |
| 24,000+ | Very large space | R18,000–R22,000+ |
| Ducted / central | Whole home | From R45,000 |
What pushes the price up
- Pipe-run length. A back-to-back install (indoor and outdoor units on the same wall) is cheapest. Long runs need extra copper pipe, trunking, and labour.
- Wall type and access. Core-drilling through double face-brick, or working at height, adds time.
- Electrical work. If you need a new dedicated circuit from the DB board, factor in an electrician.
- Brand and inverter type. Inverter units cost more upfront but run far cheaper than older fixed-speed models.
Why use a SAQCC Gas-registered technician
By law, anyone handling refrigerant gas must be registered with SAQCC Gas. A registered technician installs the unit correctly, charges it to the right pressure, and gives you a warranty-valid job. An unregistered "cheap" install can void your manufacturer warranty and is illegal.
